Stephen Barber Honoured as the Inaugural Life Member of Indonesian Rugby

Since Indonesian Rugby kicked off on May 10, 2004, Stephen Barber has been along for the roller-coaster ride as the Union has navigated the highs and lows of trying to establish Rugby as a sustainable and nationally recognised Game here in Indonesia. Stephen or ‘Barbs’ as he is known to the Indonesian Rugby community has worn many hats for the Union and has demonstrated a significant and sustained commitment toward the enhancement and reputation of Persatuan Rugby Union Indonesia (PRUI) since its establishment. Stephen was presented with a plaque to honour his Life Membership by PRUI Chairman, Yudha Ramon at the ‘2013 Indonesian Rugby Charity Lunch’.

PRUI awards Life Membership in recognition of the exceptional contributions of an individual to the Union, to the community and to the sport of Rugby Union. Here are some notable contributions achieved by Stephen:

  • Indonesian National Team, Rhinos Representative 2006-08
  • Played in the Rhinos First Test versus Cambodia on June 27, 2006
  • Test record – 5 Tests (4 wins, 1 loss); 3 tries
  • Rhinos Team Manager – 2009
  • Assisted in the Organisation and Hosting of the 2008 HSBC Regional Tournament, plus 2010 and 2011 HSBC Division 3 Tournaments played at University of Pelita Harapan (UPH), Jakarta
  • SIRR Referee 2005-Present
  • Coached at 2011-13 Jakarta Highland Gathering/ Britcham’s ‘Give Kids a Sporting Chance’ Charity Day
  • PRUI Women’s Rugby Coach 2013
  • Has assisted PRUI in raising over US$500,000, including organising all fund raising Lunches and Dinners held since 2005
  • Passionate and loyal servant of Indonesian Rugby in so many other ways
