Juniors and Women’s teams shine at Jakarta Tens 2019

The latest edition of the Jakarta Komodo Tens Open Festival is done and dusted, having been played at GBK Rugby Field Jakarta last Saturday, 27 April 2019.

As in previous years, the excitement and atmosphere of strong camaraderie could be felt since the morning. Teams arriving from all over Indonesia and abroad began to fill available tents around the venue which also hosted the Rugby 7s competition at the 2018 Asian Games.

Only one field down from the senior competition, GBK Field B was also used as part of the Rugby festival to hold the Junior Rugby competition held at the same time.

All the matches took place with enthusiastic excitement particularly in the Men’s Open category where international teams such as Gaulois from France/ Singapore, Wanderers Singapore and Polytechnic Merlimau from Malaysia took part. Indonesian teams like Bali Chilis and Jakarta Banteng were as always, ready and willing to represent too.

What was very encouraging this year was the arrival of a number of relatively newly formed teams in Indonesia such as Bregada Yogyakarta, Banten Satu and Kujang Bandung. The same was also evident in the Women ‘s Open Sevens category where Kujang Bandung, Jakarta Banteng, Bregada Yogyakarta and UNJ Rugby all had teams participating.

It was a sight to behold to see so many Indonesian ladies battle it out on the Rugby field. Thumbs up as Indonesian Women’s Rugby have shown how truly determined they are to continue to advance the game in Indonesia.

In the junior category, there were a number of local teams from SMPN 99 Jakarta, SDN 06 Jatinegara, SDN 03 North Jakarta, Jakarta Komodos Junior Rugby, JJRG Junior as well as SD Gunung Kidul from Yogyakarta. All were introduced to the game through the Get Into Rugby training conducted by PRUI in various provinces.

The Women’s and Junior Rugby categories were especially proud to see as they reflected all the hard work that PRUI and Indonesian Rugby stakeholders have been doing to impart Rugby values to the wider community.

At the end of the day in the Men ‘s Open category, Royal Warriors from Malaysia defeated Bali Chilis to win the Cup, UNJ beat Wanderers to take the Plate, Banteng held off Bandung in the Bowl category and Yogyakarta beat Banten for the Shield.

In the Women’s category, the Cup was won by UNJ who beat Yogyakarta and Banteng Srikandi defeated Bandung for the Plate.

The junior and veteran categories along with the complete final results can be seen below.

A massive thank you for a wonderful Rugby festival, especially to the Jakarta Komodo Rugby Football Club Chairman, Kyle Larson along with Agus Djamhoer, Daniel Van Tuijl and the entire Jakarta Tens committee. We all look forward to another great day of Rugby next year!
