On Friday October 24 a delegation from Persatuan Rugby Union Indonesia (PRUI) met with Ibu Rita Subowo and other representatives from Komite Olympiade Indonesia (KOI) at the KOI Office in Senayan, Jakarta. Ibu Rita and her team were happy to welcome the PRUI representatives given that Rugby Sevens is now an Olympic Sport and also on the basis that Indonesia will host the 2018 Asian Games and Rugby Sevens will be included in the event.
PRUI was represented by Vice Chairman, Fikri Al-Azhar, Secretary-General, Stevie Haurissa, National Development Manager, Karina Soerjanatamihardja and Head of International Relations, Stephen Barber.
Ibu Rita explained to the PRUI delegation the steps that the Union must take to be recognised as a KOI Member and all things being equal and the necessary steps being taken this should be achieved in early 2015.
KOI has also asked PRUI to assist it in the planning and organisation of the Rugby Sevens Tournament which will be part of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. During the meeting discussions were held on possible venues for this tournament plus also it was indicated that PRUI would seek the assistance of the International Rugby Board (IRB) and the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) to help run this tournament successfully. During the meeting Ibu Rita explained how the new President of Indonesia, Jokowi had already held a couple of meetings with KOI to ensure that organised planning procedures have been put in place from the start of his tenure as the Indonesian President.
It was a very fruitful meeting and as a sign of things to come both KOI and PRUI agreed to work closely with other in the lead up to the 2018 Asian Games and beyond.
