Saturday 15 December at the British International School (BIS) saw a great festival of Indonesian Junior and Schools Rugby 7’s. From the Jakarta Komodos U8’s to the old hands of the Jakarta International School (JIS) Blue U18’s Team it was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm and endeavour from a group of youngsters. With the inclusion of Rugby 7’s in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, Persatuan Rugby Union Indonesia (PRUI) recognises the need to develop Rugby 7’s as a sport for all school age children in Indonesia, and the Union is very supportive of tournaments such as that played at BIS last weekend.
In the U18 Tournament the JIS Blue team were the class act and led the way, playing some great rugby. The French School, LIF A, were worthy runners-up having pipped BIS to a slot in the Final coming from behind in a tooth-and-nail pool encounter.
Sekolah Pelita Harapan (SPH), playing some very robust sevens, Global Jaya International School (GJIS), Banteng Mudah (with two Indonesian Rhinos) and Pangudi Luhur have all made great progress over the past year and ensured that there were no easy matches throughout the U18’s competition.
In the U15 event, there were only three teams with BIS proving the stronger in the face of some spirited opposition from GJIS and Cendrawasih.
Komodos Juniors provided a glimpse of the future with some very entertaining U8’s and U11’s matches and the Jakarta Komodos Rugby Club are doing a great job in promoting the game among a group of fledgling players.
Jamie Johnston from BIS commented, “A big thank you to all the young players, their coaches and supporters and in particular to Messrs. Joyce, Barber, Sparrow, Law and Nayman who all helped with the refereeing on the day”.
Jamie also thanked Pak Yudha Ramon, Chairman of PRUI for his support on the day and for presenting the Awards at the end of the U18’s Final.
PRUI is very thankful to Jamie and all his team from BIS for organising a fantastic day of Junior and Schools Rugby on two very well prepared pitches. PRUI also thanks SPH and GJIS for organising the two previous tournaments and it encourages all schools interested in playing rugby to contact the Union in regards to being involved in future training sessions and tournaments.
