KONI Tertarik pada Rugby / KONI Keen on Rugby

On Tuesday January 15, a PRUI delegation headed by PRUI President Air Vice Marshall (retired) Pieter Wattimena, met with Bapak Tono Suratman, the Chairman of Komite Olahraga Nasional Indonesia (KONI) and other representatives of KONI. The aim of this meeting was to report on the progress of Rugby Union development in Indonesian plus to file an application for the Game to become a permanent KONI Member Sport.

Pak Tono expressed his support for Rugby Union to become a permanent KONI Member Sport. He also mentioned that during his time of service in KOPASUS (Indonesian Special Forces) that Rugby was a compulsory sport for all servicemen as it was a tough and chivalrous sport. He also said the he and his colleagues from KONI Pusat will assist the Persatuan Rugby Union Indonesia (PRUI) Executive Committee (ExCo) in having Rugby recognised as a KONI Member Sport at the upcoming KONI Members Meeting on February 19-21 in Bandung.

Pak Tono also recognised the ability of Rugby to be able to attract foreign visitors to Indonesia especially at tournaments such as those held in Bali and Jakarta. It was also noted that Rugby will be added to the sports played at the 2015 South East Asian Games (SEAG), which will be held in Singapore and as such it is now an opportune time for Rugby to be recognised as an Indonesian National Sport so training programs can be put in place.

Currently the PRUI ExCo and representatives from KONI are collecting information from the 11 Rugby playing provinces in order to gain a recommendation from the KONIDA in each of those provinces which will be presented at the KONI Members Meeting in late February.

This positive feedback from KONI will allow PRUI the ability to socialise Rugby to the wider Indonesian community with the support of the both KONI and the Indonesian Government. All of those involved in Indonesian Rugby are hopeful that the Game will soon be recognised as a National Sport in Indonesia.
