GIR Participation Numbers on the Rise

GIR Participation Numbers on the Rise

Indonesian Rugby is making great strides ahead with the IRB’s Get Into Rugby (GIR) programme in the Jakarta-Bogor region with 420 participants (152 males and 268 females) to date. These numbers are expected to grow dramatically over the coming months now that schools are back in full swing after the mid-year break.

A core group of young ladies from the Mama Sayang’s Orphanage (pictured above) have been participating in the GIR programme over the past 2 months. GIR has assisted these young ladies in further developing their knowledge and understanding of how to play Rugby.

Thanks to Herlina Bangun, several children at the Mama Sayang Orphanage, located at Jonggol, south of Jakarta have also been introduced to GIR as well. Herlina or Lina as she is known has done a fantastic job in promoting GIR to her friends at the orphanage.

Last week saw a number of school children in the Bogor region added to the GIR programme thanks to the good work led by Indonesian Rugby stalwart Robert McKinnon, who commented over the weekend that, “the kids love it and he will do his best to grow the participation numbers in the Bogor region”.

The Singapore International School in Jakarta is also keen to add GIR to its school sports curriculum and ACG International School also in Jakarta will be adding GIR as an After School Activity in Term 2 (early October).

Schools interested in getting involved in GIR should contact Karina Soerja, Indonesian Rugby’s National Development Manager via email – karina.soerja@rugbyindonesia.or.id
