Jakarta HUB – Rhinos Selection

Jakarta HUB di Helat,
Pemain Jakarta-Bandung Tampil Impresif

Jakarta HUB Selection,
National players from Jakarta-Bandung impress

In April 2013, PRUI began implementing a new system to select players to form part of the National Rugby Team, known as the Rhinos. This started with the Jakarta HUB Regional Selection Match on Saturday April 6 at the Komodos’ Rugby Pitch located within the grounds of the Jagorawi Golf & Country Club, south of Jakarta.

This match featured over 30 players from the Jakarta and Bandung regions who participated in this competitive ‘friendly’ selection match against the Komodos (some of whom are eligible for National selection as well). The game provided players and selectors alike with a a grueling 80 minutes (4 by 20 minutes) of play, which provided an opportunity for all 30 players to prove to the selectors that they are worthy to represent Indonesia in the upcoming HSBC Asian 5 Nations Division 3 Tournament in June. Players will also be selected from 2 other HUBS in Bali and Papua.

The success of the inaugural HUB program run by Persatuan Rugby Union Indonesia (PRUI) is also due to the valuable assistance provided by two elite Coaches on loan from the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) for 2 months. Part of their program is to help Indonesian National Coach, Jamie Johnston to identify the skill levels of the available players in each HUB.

The Jakarta HUB match saw a combined team from Jakarta and Bandung play against a team from the Jakarta Komodos Rugby Club (made up predominantly of foreign players). The Komodos are a formidable team that has not lost any local matches in recent years.

Thanks to a strategy devised by Jamie Johnston and the Japanese Coaches (who were also assisted by Akmal and his assistant Fajar from PRUI), the Jakarta HUB Team successfully defeated the Komodos 15-10. It was a humble victory for the Jakarta HUB team in a match that was exciting to watch and one which showed how Rugby is beginning to develop in Indonesia. One fine aspect of the match was the potential shown by several of the Indonesian National Under 20’s players, who are sure to be future stars of Indonesian Rugby.
