Are you over 40 and still want to pull on your boots and play some Rugby with likeminded lads who live by the concept ‘that the older I get the better I was’? Well here’s your chance to relive those old memories and make some new ones on the Rugby fields of Asia. Call it a mid-life crisis or what you want, but a group of lads made up of Steve Nye, Bill Ryan, Aaron Meadows, Kyle Larson and Cameron Bates decided over the Christmas/ New Year period it was time to brush the dust off their boots, grab some mates and start playing Rugby again.
Scott Briggs (Jakarta Komodos Junior Rugby Manager) and Mark Manderson (Jakarta Komodos Chairman) have provided access for the Jakarta Vets to the Jakarta Komodos Rugby Club training facilities at Jagorawi, south of Jakarta. Training takes place at 10.30am on Saturday mornings, following the Junior Rugby Training so that interested Mums and Dads can hang around after the kids have trained.
Alastair Speirs from NOW! Jakarta has also kindly offered to promote Jakarta Vets Rugby together with Indonesia Rugby through his print media business and contacts.
After a successful first get together on Saturday January 10, Steve Nye said that he believed that there is enough interest for the establishment of a Jakarta Vet Rugby team.
It is proposed that the Jakarta Vets get together each Saturday morning at 10:30am for a game of touch, some enlightening coaching by the evergreen Alan Nye plus anyone else that would like to assist, a few laughs and a bit of fitness. It is hoped from these training sessions that a core group of players can be formed that will allow the Vets to participate in invitational games against other local or Vets teams, partake in regional tours to the likes of KL, Singapore, Manila, Hong Kong and other centre’s in SE Asia plus consider entering teams into the Jakarta and Bali 10’s Tournaments.
As there are many players and fathers of Komodo Juniors still returning from holidays, the formalisation of a Jakarta Vet’s team and committee has not be completed yet but several suggestions were put forward during the initial run out on January 10 and these included:
- Forming the Vets under the Komodo Banner allowing the use of existing facilities, access to web site, relevant registration requirements in accordance with World Rugby requirements, etc
- Proposed Vets team is OPEN to all players (male and female) of all nationalities over the age of 40 years of age
- Players from all other clubs are more than welcome to join and help to promote Vets Rugby in Indonesia
- Team name and Logo to be selected through suggestions and a final ballot
A committee to oversee and administrate the Jakarta Vets team is recommended and nominations for a Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary will be sent out soon.
If you are interested in getting involved then please email Steve Nye at jakartavetsrugby@gmail.com
