There are many words and phrases in Rugby that is not only confusing to a Bahasa Indonesia native, but also difficult to comprehend even in English. Surely with the advent of Google Translate and other translation tools, these phrases and words become easier to understand for an Indonesian. Hmmm… let’s see…
- Maul = Menganiaya = Assault. So in Bahasa Indonesia, according to Google Translate, you are being assaulted… We can relate…
- Ruck = Kerut = Wrinkle. You’ve just been tackled to the ground and both teams drive over you and a “wrinkle” is formed…
- Scrum Half = Scrum Setengah = Half Scrum. Literally “Half Scrum” insinuating this player is half the size of any other player… No political correctness in Google Translate Bahasa Indonesia, it would seem.
- Dummy Pass = Operan Bodoh = Stupid Pass. When it works, it works well but in Bahasa Indonesia it seems that it is always a stupid thing to do.
- Dead Ball Line = Garis Bola Mati = Line of Ball Deaths. Probably the most somber sports translation in Bahasa Indonesia. Ever.
- Knock On = Mengetuk/ Ketuk Menyala = knock and turn on. The combination of ‘ketuk’ and ‘nyala’ makes this one a classic.
- All Blacks = Semua Orang Kulit Hitam = all the black people. No comment (check google translate yourself).
- Gain Line = Mendapatkan Garis = receive the line. The what? Of what? Nevermind…
- Killing the Ball = Membunuh Bola = Killing the Ball. I know you’re not supposed to take it literally but this translation kinda does…
- Blind Side = Sisi Gelap = Dark Side. Luke… I can’t see the ball…
